Practitioners often ask, “How can proteolytic enzyme supplements support my patients and practice?” “How can’t they?”, might be easier to answer since digestive proteolytic enzymes assist with breaking dietary proteins into amino acids which then help build new cells, tissues, & organs, support neurotransmission of information between the brain and nervous system cells, provide energy for the body, build new enzymes, and perform many other absolutely critical bodily functions.* Considering all this, let’s narrow this discussion of proteolytic enzyme supplements to those that are used systemically, away from meals, to address proteins not necessarily associated with mealtime.
Protein is clearly essential to a body’s well-being. Myriads of established benefits are well-understood. It is also known that most disorders and health challenges involve some form of protein imbalance or another. On vulnerability to bodily imbalances, Dr. David Lopez, MD, states in his book Enzymes the Fountain of Life, “Every disorder basically involves disturbed enzyme function, with increased enzyme requirements…”.1  The critical roles that proteins play in our health status is largely why proteases are the most well-researched category of enzymes.
In fact, research validates that oral proteases, administered away from meals, can enter the blood, bind with alpha 2 macroglobulins (immune system components made by the liver and white blood cells) and help degrade unwanted proteins that challenge our health.2,3,4  Proteases are unique in that they are one of the only supplements which actually become part of our immune system. Their safety and efficacy in working with the body and its innate wisdom to help restore balance is a key feature that makes proteases shine as a supplement choice.*
Proteases (and enzymes in general) have a long history of use and excellent safety record. With regard to joints, proteolytic enzymes may be used to support healthy circulation, assist with the removal of dead and damaged tissue, and encourage the body in efficient renewal of the affected region.* Should surgical procedures be necessary, enzymes may still play a role in supporting the body’s natural healing ability.*
Joint health is a concern for almost everyone at one time or another. Whether it’s discomfort or overexertion, proteases should be one of the first supplements to come to mind. They do not need to be processed by the body before they are useful; once enzymes are released from their capsule, they are ready to serve us- making them one of the fastest-acting catalysts for change.
Proteolytic enzymes work synergistically with the body’s own mechanisms of renewal and may support the body’s natural response to overexertion and strenuous activities.* Proteases are actually one of the only supplements that truly become part of the immune system to help the body address proteins and proteinaceous debris that’s dead, damaged or otherwise does not belong in the body.*
