On this episode of Healthy Happenings, Dr. Holly asks Dr. Shade what exactly the ECS system is and how it was discovered. Dr. Shade likes to describe the ECS system as what brings us neuro endo immune poise, essentially what helps bring us to balance. The ECS is a system of receptors in the body with more receptors than any other receptor system and is not unique to humans. Taking away the stigma of marijuana, the structure of CBD was only revealed in 1963 and the CB receptors weren’t even discovered till the 90’s. There are two main receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 is dominantly in the central nervous system and CB2 is mainly in the periphery in organs and immune cells. There is some crossover however. To remind people, THC the psychoactive component in marijuana is a phytocannabinoid that goes to the CB1 receptors. CBD works more on the CB2 receptors and a more powerfully healing side of the ECS.

At a glance, you have 2 receptors, we have 2 phytocannabinoids coming from the outside (THC and CBD) and then two main endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol that all have their own lifespans of being formed and destroyed like any neurotransmitter or signaling molecule would. We all have different levels of this and it’s called your endocannabinoid tone.

Understanding these systems, it helps to look at the parasympathetic (rest digest) and sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous systems. With neurotransmitters, the fight or flight is associated with glutamate. When this is too active, it translates as anxiety and chronic tension. In the body, this can lock up systems. On the other side, you have GABA working with the parasympathetic. To help limit the glutamate, the ECS helps keep the system in check. We can however become deficient in our own ECS and that is where the phytocannabinoids come into play to help us. CBD potentiates the CB receptors and catalyzes a pooling up of endocannabinoids and then stimulates them to do their jobs. As a phytochemical, CBD regulates anti inflammatory genes. In essence, this system can become unbalanced like any other system of the body.

He has patented a mercury speciation diagnostic process to analyze human toxicity, founded the only clinical lab in the world offering mercury speciation analysis, and has designed cutting edge systems of nutraceuticals for detoxification and antioxidant protection, including advanced phospholipid delivery systems for both water-and fat-soluble compounds. His Quicksilver Delivery Systems® nanoparticle technology increases the bioavailability of supplements and protocols leading to higher efficacy products.

Dr. Shade is regularly sought out to speak as an educator on the topics of mercury, environmental toxicities, neuroinflammation, immune dysregulation, and the human detoxification system in the United States and internationally. He has helped corporate executives, professional athletes, celebrities, children with autism, patients with chronic immune disorders and more. He strives to evolve the way the medical industry delivers care, and he is perpetually broadening the way the world understands health.
